In most cases, you do not need a doctor’s referral to see a physiotherapist in British Columbia. However, some extended health insurance plans may require a referral for reimbursement, so we recommend checking your individual plan.
Wear comfortable clothing that allows you to move easily and gives your physiotherapist access to the area being assessed. Athletic or loose-fitting clothing is usually a good choice.
Your first appointment typically includes a detailed assessment of your symptoms, movement, strength and functional limitations. Your physiotherapist will discuss your goals and develop an individualized treatment and rehabilitation plan based on their findings.
You do not need to have a referral to see a Registered Massage Therapist, Acupuncturist, or Chiropractor. A doctor's note/referral may be required for certain extended health benefits and ICBC claims - please check with your insurer prior to booking an appointment.
